We will be handing in our papers from Heart of Darkness on Monday. We will have no vocabulary lesson from the book, as we will have the vocab posted to the right. We will start Beowulf on Tuesday, see you next week!.

This week's unit is about Beowulf. Here are the notes from class:
Beowulf-Geatish hero. Has the following qualities: prowess, strong, able, wise, chivalrous, courage, loyalty, nobility, wit, honor, generosity
Chivalry
Denotation-French for "horse", literally man on a horse
Connotation-treats women with respect
courage, strength, wit, loyalty, nobility, ability, prowess, wisdom, generous, honorable
King Hrothgar-King of the Danes, "father" to Beowulf
Grendel-demon descended from Cain
Grendel's mother-a demon even more monstrous than Grendel
Unferth-warrior, jealous of Beowulf
denotation-literal definition of a word
connotation-ideas associated with a word
feudalism
-society based on allegiance to baron or estate
Germanic-English language, as it is rooted in German, see chart below
